Generalized Anxiety Disorder

There isn't an actual set cause for generalized anxiety disorder. However researchers have found some most likely causes:
- Generalized anxiety disorder runs in families and may occur due to genetics
- Children who had witnessed some type of tramatic event(s)
- Twice as many woman are diagnosed with this illness than men are
- Substance abuse will severely worsen your anxiety

If you are involved with having generalized anxiety disorder it is more than important to seek professional help. The worries aren't just going to go away. Without treatment nothing will progress. Thankfully, there are many different treatments.
These include, first off, medical treatment. There are a variety of different medications such as antidepressants and benzodiazepines. Antidepressants influence and connect with the activity of brain chemicals that play a role within anxiety disorders, such as Paxil and Zoloft. Benzodiazepines however work more in limited circumstances. They are for short term relief. Some examples of these include Ativan, Valium, and Xanax.
There are also therapists that you can contact. It may be hard to find someone that you are comfortable with, which is common, so it may take a while to find someone you really like. Therapy concentrates on making behavioral changes and underlying life stresses. It's overall a very effective route to take when dealing with anxiety (for some people).
